Oltre a cantare è anche tastierista e chitarrista. noto per aver fondato il gruppo Allman Brothers Band insieme al fratello Duane Allman. Nel 1995 è stato introdotto nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, nel 2006 ha ricevuto un Lifetime Achievement Award dalla Georgia Music Hall of Fame.
